LABOR AID: FUEL YOUR BIRTH
LABOR AID: A delicious, mineral-rich elixir to recharge you throughout birth
Labor and birth are energy-taxing events that require tremendous amounts of physical, mental, and emotional stamina. The notion that women “should not” or worse, “aren’t allowed” to eat or drink freely during labor is illogical and dangerous. Illogical because bodies doing the hardest work they’ve ever done, need fuel. Dangerous because the chance of unnecessary or unwanted medical intervention increases when mothers are too exhausted.
The reason this protocol is in place in most hospitals (although times are-a-changin’ and many hospitals are shifting their policies) is because if the woman requires a cesarean birth under anesthesia at any point, she may vomit up that recently-ingested food and aspirate (breathe in) the vomit which could cause infection or fatal choking. This is a real risk, AND it is very unlikely.
And, yet, even if allowed to eat/drink freely, many women do not WANT to eat during labor. Smells are intensified, chewing feels impossible, there may even be vomiting - it’s an unappetizing time overall. Muscle contractions use huge amounts of energy, and the uterus is a very energetically-taxing muscle. SO, then, allow me to introduce a drink that packs a punch with glucose, electrolytes, and other vitamins and minerals to keep you laboring strong:
LABOR AID RECIPE
In a large mason jar, mix the following:
the juice of two whole lemons
3 tablespoons local raw honey
1-2 heaping tablespoons Calm or Calm Plus magnesium powder by Natural Vitality
1.5 teaspoons sea salt
The Calm powder fizzes and looks crazy, just relax - it calms down. CALMS down. Get it. Ha. Ok then pour this mix into an ice cube tray freeze over night! Pop ‘em out of the tray in the morning, and store in a freezer bag or Tupperware in the freezer until it’s baby time! Add 2-4 cubes per each 8oz glass of water, to thaw into and allow your drink serve you in many ways for your journey through birth! And don’t forget - straws are a game changer!
PRO-TIP: Want an easy postpartum poop? Pooping after birth, whether vaginal or belly, can be a terrifying event. The magnesium in this powder is in the form of magnesium citrate, which acts as an osmotic laxative at certain doses. This helps keep that first postpartum poop nice and smooth!
